π The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
She was magical, beautiful beyond beliefβand completely alone…The unicorn had lived since before memory in a forest where death could touch nothing. Maidens who caught a glimpse of her glory were blessed by enchantment they would never forget. But outside her wondrous realm, dark whispers and rumours carried a message she could not “Unicorns are gone from the world.” Aided by a bumbling magician and an indomitable spinster, she set out to learn the truth. but she feared even her immortal wisdom meant nothing in a world where a mad king’s curse and terror incarnate lived only to stalk the last unicorn to her doom…
Orion Gollancz
The Last Unicorn is a classic fantasy novel which I’ve never had the chance to pick up before! After attending Gollanczfest, and seeing in on the stall I decided to pick it up. Wanting to read it sooner rather than later, April seems like the perfect month for this small fantasy novel.
π The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney
Mill Valley, Marin County, California.
Dr Miles Bennell has lived there all his life. But one day Miles sees a patient who claims her Uncle isn’t himself. He’s a different person, despite being identical in every way except one: he is only pretending to have emotions.
Miles dismisses this as delusions and refers her to a psychiatrist.
Then he finds the pods. Giant seed pods, filled with a strange, grey substance. A strange grey substance that can slowly, slowly, become a perfect replica of a person. But what has happened to the people being replicated?
GollanczNot a book I would usually pick up, as I generally lean more on the fantasy side of SFF… but Gollancfest gave this for free in their goodie bags and so I do now own it. I’m going to be trying to read this from the comfort of sun filled skies and grass filled places so it doesn’t creep me out too much too π
π The Phoenix Keeper by S.A. Maclean
As head phoenix keeper at a world-renowned zoo for magical creatures, Aila’s childhood dream of conserving critically endangered firebirds seems closer than ever. There’s just one glaring caveat: her zoo’s breeding program hasn’t functioned for a decade. When a tragic phoenix heist sabotages the flagship initiative at a neighbouring zoo, Aila must prove her derelict facilities are fit to take the reins.
But saving an entire species from extinction requires more than stellar animal handling skills. Carnivorous water horses, tempestuous thunderhawks, mischievous dragons… Aila has no problem wrangling beasts. Inspiring zoo patrons? That’s another story. Mustering the courage to ask for help from the hotshot griffin keeper at the zoo’s most popular exhibit? Virtually impossible.
Especially when the hotshot griffin keeper in question just so happens to be her arch-rival from college: Luciana, an annoyingly brooding and even more annoyingly insufferable know-it-all with the grace of a goblin and the face of a goddess who’s convinced that Aila’s beloved phoenix would serve their cause better as an active performer rather than as a passive conservation exhibit.
With the world watching and the threat of poachers looming, Aila’s success is no longer merely a matter of keeping her job…
She is the keeper of the phoenix, and the future of a species now rests on her shoulders.
There’s just one thing she has to remember: she is also not alone.
Gollancz
Another goodie bag choice from Gollanczfest, The Phoenix Keeper is an exclusive ARC copy before it’s full release in summer of this year. I’m hoping to read and love it since it includes multiple magical creatures and an enemies to lovers romance.
π Voyager by Diana Gabaldon
From the author of the breathtaking bestsellersΒ OutlanderΒ andΒ Dragonfly in Amber, the extraordinary saga continues.
Their passionate encounter happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her… and her body still cries out for him in her dreams.
Then Claire discovers that Jamie survived. Torn between returning to him and staying with their daughter in her own era, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face the passion and pain awaiting her…the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland… and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that can reunite or forever doom her timeless love.
Arrow BooksI’ve been slowly reading the Outlander series for the past year and I’m about halfway through Voyager atm. I’m hoping in April we’ll get a bit more through it and maybe even finish it!
π The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
The impossible has been accomplished. The Lord Rulerβthe man who claimed to be god incarnate and brutally ruled the world for a thousand yearsβhas been vanquished. But Kelsier, the hero who masterminded that triumph, is dead too, and now the awesome task of building a new world has been left to his young protΓ©gΓ©, Vin, the former street urchin who is now the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and to the idealistic young nobleman she loves.
As Kelsier’s protΓ©gΓ© and slayer of the Lord Ruler she is now venerated by a budding new religion, a distinction that makes her intensely uncomfortable. Even more worrying, the mists have begun behaving strangely since the Lord Ruler died, and seem to harbor a strange vaporous entity that haunts her.
Stopping assassins may keep Vin’s Mistborn skills sharp, but it’s the least of her problems. Luthadel, the largest city of the former empire, doesn’t run itself, and Vin and the other members of Kelsier’s crew, who lead the revolution, must learn a whole new set of practical and political skills to help. It certainly won’t get easier with three armies – one of them composed of ferocious giants – now vying to conquer the city, and no sign of the Lord Ruler’s hidden cache of atium, the rarest and most powerful allomantic metal.
As the siege of Luthadel tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows.
Tor Books
I started a Final Empire last year, and whilst I really enjoyed it I needed a break between some of the bigger epic fantasy novels I’d been reading at the time. But April is the month to continue on with the Mistborn Trilogy I think.
π The Tower of the Swallow by Andrzej Sapkowski
The world has fallen into war. Ciri, the child of prophecy, has vanished. Hunted by friends and foes alike, she has taken on the guise of a petty bandit and lives free for the first time in her life. But the net around her is closing. Geralt, the Witcher, has assembled a group of allies determined to rescue her. Both sides of the war have sent brutal mercenaries to hunt her down. Her crimes have made her famous.
There is only one place left to run. The tower of the swallow is waiting…
GollanczAnother ongoing fantasy series I’ve been enjoying is The Witcher, and I’m now on The Tower of the Swallow. I’m intrigued of watch Geralt and Ciri will get up to next.
Thank you for joining me on this literary odyssey. Until we meet again, may your shelves be stocked with tales yet untold, and may the adventure of reading continue to enrich your days, one chapter at a time.
Happy Reading πβ¨
