As we’re getting into colder weather it’s really starting to feel like Autumn. So I’ve been taking the time to pull out all the books that I love reading this season, that give off that cosy colder vibe, as well as intrigue and something a bit darker at times. From childhood favourites filled with soft nostalgia, to stories you just can’t put down – autumn vibes are the goal for the next few months.
Tolkien’s always had a love for long walks in the countryside, and most of all in the autumn season. So when writing about Middle-Earth he ensured the prominence of autumn wanderlust in some of the Hobbits we come across.
When journeying from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, it’s always best to have a warm cup in your hand and a cosy blanket to curl up under.
Fairytales are perfect for those grey and rainy days, and even more so are these amazing Scottish Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends. Reminding myself of days hiking through the lochs as Autumn settles in is something I love to do, and so when I pick up any story that has that inspiration woven into it I adore it.
There’s also version for Welsh and Irish if you want to branch out too.
In Enchatment of Raven’s we can go on a little journey with the Prince of the Autumn Court, Rook. Plus I always find that I’m veering towards more fae focused stories as we get into the colder months.
Following this story through the land of the fair folk, and how Isobel stands up to the Alder King is perfect for when the leaves are starting to feel from the trees.
A gothic fantasy about monsters and magic, set on the banks of a cursed lake. Lakesedge has the perfect gothic manor, with a mystery of the Lord Under to keep you gripped to every page.
I don’t know about you but I love going back to old favourites in the fall. Ballet Shoes follow the lives of three orphans adopted into a family during the war – utilising the found family trope with the sisters as well as those that raise them.
The cosiness often comes in the intricate descriptions of the stage school they attend, explaining the clothing in detail as well as the stories each of them go through.
It’s a coming of age story which is a quick read over a blustery weekend this autumn.
Whenever I think of Autumn I do think of Gilmore Girls and that “New England” aesthetic as the trees start to lose their leaves. So Private, a boarding school series, set in New England has all those elements plus with a lot of intrigue and mystery.
Think Gossip Girl crossed with Academia and you’ll find yourself with the Billings Girls. The Private series is a great series to read through with a steaming cup of tea.
Whilst the film of the same name is a cult classic around halloween, you should also try picking up the book. With family bonds, witchiness and a curse through the ages…
Practical Magic is the perfect witchy book for a rainy day, and it is a long-beloved and exquisitely crafted character-driven novel. It may potentially make you want to binge the entire series from Hoffman too.
