With so many films and shows being put on pause during the pandemic, we’ve been avidly awaiting some of these book adaptations for a while. From high fantasy to contemporary there’s something for everyone coming in 2022.
The Shining Girls
Release Date: TBC 2022
In 2020, Apple green lit a straight-to-series order for Laura Beukes novel, The Shining Girls with prodution starting in May 2021. As far as we know, the series will follow the book’s narrative where a serial killer in Chicago during the Depression-era 1930s stumbles upon a time traveling device, and must murder the titular “Shining Girls” to continue his travels. .
Deep Water
Release Date: TBC 2022
After years in the making, the third book adaptation of class Highsmith novel, Deep Water, is currently in post-production. Deep Water is about well-to-do husband who allows his wife to have affairs in order to avoid a divorce becomes a prime suspect in the disappearance of her lovers.
The Black Phone
Release Date: 28th January 2022
The Black Phone is a book adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story of the same name. It’s an upcoming American horror-thriller film directed by Scott Derrickson, and adapted by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill.
Death on the Nile
Release Date: 11th February 2022
Sequel to Kenneth Brannagh’s Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile is another Poirot adaptation and is coming out in 2022. Not the first book adapatation of Death on the Nile, but one that we’re excited to watch after the previous installment.
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris
Release Date: Expected 4th March 2022
A new adaptation of Paul Gallico’s much-loved novel about a cleaning lady in 1950s London who falls in love with an haute couture dress by Christian Dior and decides to gamble everything for the sake of this folly.
Where the Crawdads Sing
Release Date: 24th June 2022
Based on the best selling novel, Where the Crawdads Sing is about a woman who raised herself in the marshes of the deep South becomes a suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with.
Kya Clark, otherwise known as the Marsh Girl by the townspeople of Barkley Cove, is mysterious and wild. Abandoned by her family, Where the Crawdads Sing is a coming of age story of a young girl raised by the marshlands of the south in the 50’s. Watching many years past, when the town hotshot is found dead, and inexplicably linked to Kya, the Marsh Girl is the prime suspect in his murder case.
White Bird: A Wonder Story
Release Date: 16th September 2022
A young Jewish girl hidden away by a boy and his family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.
The Nightingale
Release Date: 23rd December 2022
This book adaptation follows the lives of two sisters living in France are torn apart at the onset of World War II. Based on Kristin Hannah’s novel ‘The Nightingale’.
The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry
Release Date: TBC 2022
Based on New York Times bestseller, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. A.J. Fikry’s wife has died, his bookstore is in trouble, and now his prized rare edition of Poe poems has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears, its arrival gives him the chance to make his life over and see things anew
Persuasion
Release Date: TBC 2022
We all love a good Jane Austen book adaptation, and so we’re excited to see Persuasion in 2022 with a star cast.
The School for Good and Evil
Release Date: TBC 2022
Based on the NYT bestselling series by Soman Chainani, The School for Good and Evil is finally coming to screens.
Sophie had waited her entire life to be kidnapped by the School Master and taken away to train to be a fairytale hero at The School for Good and Evil. However, Agatha, who is unliked by many for being considered a witch, is not ready to give up her only friend and must stop Sophie from going, this ending up as joining her. As the two get whisked away into the deathly secretive world of Fairytales, they find that their fortunes are reversed, much to Sophie’s dismay. Finding it impossible to escape from the treacherous world, they find that the only way out, is through a fairytale.
The Stars at Noon
Release Date: TBC 2022
The Stars at Noon is currently being adapted into film by Claire Denis, starring Robert Pattinson and Margaret Qualley. Not much is currrently known about the production, but it is speculated to be a 2022 release.
Peter Pan & Wendy
Release Date: TBC 2022
Live-action adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale of a boy who wouldn’t grow up and recruits three young siblings in London to join him on a magical adventure to the enchanted Neverland island.
White Noise
Release Date: TBC 2022
Set at a bucolic mid-western college known only as The-College-on-the-Hill, White Noise follows a year in the life of Jack Gladney, a professor who has made his name by pioneering the field of Hitler studies. This is Noah Baumbach’s first time writing and directing a book-to-screen adaptation.
All Quiet on the Western Front
Release Date: TBC 2022
Currently in post production, not much is known about this adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front. The story follows a young German soldier’s terrifying experiences and distress on the western front during World War I.
Conversations with Friends
Release Date: TBC 2022
Based on the eponymous Sally Rooney novel, originally released in 2017, this drama series comes to screens in 2022. The story covers two Dublin college students, Frances and Bobbi, and the strange and unexpected connection they forge with married couple, Melissa and Nick.
The Time Traveler’s Wife
Release Date: TBC 2022
Another adapatation of the classic book, The Time Traveler’s Wife, is currnetly in the works for our TV screens. A couple’s relationship is put to the test when time travel is involved. A TV adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife.’
The Lord of the Rings Show
Release Date: TBC 2022
From what we’ve heard so far, the Lord of the Rings show on Amazon Prime Video won’t be a specific book adaptation, but a TV show based within the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This will take place thousands of years before the events of Lord of the Rings, some of which may be covered within Tolkien’s Unfinished Tales book.
Details that have been released say that this epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.
Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
House of the Dragon
Release Date: TBC 2022
House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones and based on George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood. It’s focused on the story of the House Targaryen and is set 300 before the events of Game of Thrones.
