I have a soft spot for trying out new moisturisers because of my very combination skin. I’m always on the look out for a new one which will help my dry patches, whilst balancing the oiliness and also helping out my break outs. So when I got this sample of Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion+ I was excited to try it out as so many people use it, and that it’s part of Clinique’s 3 step skincare.
Main Ingredients and Their Benefits
Water acts as a solvent and enables multiple other chemicals to work much better than if they were without water. As water is water, it is also suitable for all skin types and won’t be over-drying or make skin oilier.
Mineral Oil is a clear, odourless oil derived from petroleum. It’s considered one of the safest non-sensitising moisturising ingredients found and assists to replenish skin.
Glycerin promotes skin cell maturation which can help fight effects of skin problems such as psoriasis whilst improving the appearance of skin in general. It is a humecant and helps the skin maintain it’s moisture which in turn makes the skin look healthier.
Petrolatum is a moisturising agent that works to replenish and moisturise the skin. It’s a derivative of petroleum and is considered one of the safest moisturising ingredients found.
Stearic Acid is a fatty acid that is used as a fragrance ingredient, surfactant and emulsifier. When combined with other fatty acid ingredients, the outcomes often are moisturising products.
Glyceryl Stearate is a naturally derived fatty acid, most often used as an emulsifier. It gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance as it acts as a lubricant as well as creating a barrier reducing water loss.
Seasame Oil is a skin conditioning agent which reduces appearance of dry or damaged skin by reducing flakiness and restoring suppleness. It also reduces the loss of water by forming a barrier on the skins surface.
Butylene Glycol is a solvent, viscosity-decreasing agent and a conditioner. This helps reduce the product from drying out and works well in anti-aging products as it helps retain moisture.
Trisodium EDTA is used as a water-softening and chelating agent (a compound prevents ingredients from bonding to other ingredients).
First Thoughts
I’d heard good things about Clinque’s 3 step skincare programme, and I really loved the toner that this included. So I was excited to try this lotion as my skin has been breaking out a lot recently. I’d heard that using the products together would be best, but instead I opted for a different cleanser as I didn’t love the face wash and didn’t want to use it everyday.
During Use
When first using it, I realised that the formula was extremely thin. You don’t need too much of the product as it spreads across your face really easily, but I did find that it wasn’t absorbing into my skin as quickly as I hoped.
After Use
This is obviously a lotion (similar to body lotion!) which leaves lines if you use too much and takes some time to really affect your skin. I personally would prefer a cream or gel which is able to sink into your skin.
Also, it doesn’t seem to have ingredients which combat acne and so it just moisturised my face. As I’m a fairly lazy skincare routine person I enjoy products that can combat multiple issues. If you’re looking for a decent moisturiser for average skin then this would work well.
Would I Purchase Again?
I prefer other moisturisers from Clinique such as the Moisture Surge ones and would much rather purchase them instead. The main issue was the absorbing problem as I usually apply foundation not long afterwards when getting ready!

Your reviews are so honest and detailed – I’ve been looking for a different lotion to try so thank you.
A shame this isn’t as good as other moisturisers – will look into a gel one instead I think.
I appreciate you for sharing!
love this review. Really like Clinique products but have not tried this moisturiser before. Will have a look next time I need to buy a moisturiser.
