Clinique Smart Night Custome Moisturiser Review | Help Soothe and Re-Build Skin With a Night Cream

As one of my close friends told me, we’re past 20 now and we really need to fix a good skincare routine. So I’ve been testing out different night creams to make my skin look and feel better. That’s when this sample of Clinique’s Smart Night fell right into my hands. This goes along with their SPF15 Custom Repair Moisturiser which I love.

Main Ingredients and Their Benefits

Water acts as a solvent and enables multiple other chemicals to work much better than if they were without water. As water is water, it is also suitable for all skin types and won’t be over-drying or make skin oilier.

Isostearyl Neopentanoate serves as a stabliser, emollient and binder in cosmetics. It’s used in make up, but also often used in cleansers and moisturisers.

Glycerin promotes skin cell maturation which can help fight effects of skin problems such as psoriasis whilst improving the appearance of skin in general. It is a humecant and helps the skin maintain it’s moisture which in turn makes the skin look healthier.

Butylene Glycol is a solvent, viscosity-decreasing agent and a conditioner. This helps reduce the product from drying out and works well in anti-aging products as it helps retain moisture.

Glyceryl Stearate is a naturally derived fatty acid, most often used as an emulsifier. It gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance as it acts as a lubricant as well as creating a barrier reducing water loss.

PEG-100 Stearate is used as an emollient, emulsifier and moisturiser although PEG stearates are usually known to clean the skin.

Dimethicone is a type of silicon that aids the product to glide onto your skin and also acts as a barrier after application. Dimethicone is used to protect mild skin irritations, dry patches or healing wounds, and is effective at locking in moisture thanks to its larger molecules.

Cetearyl Alcohol is used as an emolllient and helps soften your hair and skin.

Tamarindus Indica Seed Extract improves skin elasticity, hydration and smoothness. It out-performs hyalauronic acids in skin moisturisation and it useful in anti-aging formulas.

Caffeine is used in skincare to improve the look of cellulite and puffiness around the eyes. Although, there’s a mixed scientific response as to whether it is effective.

First Thoughts

After using the SPF day cream I had no worries about whether this product would moisturise my skin. I know this product wouldn’t give me any problems eczema wise as it’s used for sensitive skin and Clinique products are usually great for this.

When first looking at the formula it does look a lot thicker, so I was under the impression that this would actually be more moisturising and would sit on the skin longer.

During Use

Although I was expecting it to sit on my skin longer, it actually absorbs really quickly. My skin felt immediately smoother after use, but you can’t really feel any kind of barrier or product sitting on the skin afterwards. Plus theirs no oiliness after use as it’s a non-oil moisturiser.

A little really goes a long way as well. The product spreads easily across the skin, and I’ve been using the small tester pot on and off for a couple of months. For the price tag this is great as it feels a lot better value for money as it lasts so long.

After Use

Works great on my combination skin as it doesn’t make it too oily or dry my skin out. My skin also seems brighter and dullness doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue for me. It was definitely more moisturising than the day cream, and it really helps as part of a night routine, although could probably be used in the day if you have dry skin.

As its for sensitive skin and isn’t fragrances, it’s good for quick use on any eczema patches. I was using it for a patch on my arm while I was away travelling and didn’t have my steroid cream and it helped keep it from getting really bad before I got home.

Would I Purchase Again?

Yes I would – especially as part of a routine skincare with the day cream!

  1. I’ve never tried this one! Which is a surprise as I own a lot of Clinique. I love the smart oil from the same range though, although that is pretty heavy even on dry skin. I love love love caffeine in eye cream, it definitely helps reducing my puffiness and making my eyes feel less tight if I haven’t had much sleep. Amazing that this even worked on your eczema! x
