Five Fridays: Authors I Discovered This Year

After creating a new years resolution to read more books (and succeeding for once) I also picked up to habit of buying more books. I created the resolution to read all the unread books on my shelf and have seemed to acquired way too many books in the process. But because of this I also discovered some wonderful books and authors.

Ernest Cline

Ready Player One

As Ready Player One was being made into a film I borrowed the book off a friend. I enjoyed the book so much I’m thinking of picking up the other book he wrote and then also more video game based books in general!

L.L. McNeil

Moroda

McNeil reached out to me to read her debut book Moroda and then got me hooked. I’m avidly awaiting her second book by stalking her twitter on a bi-weekly basis.

C.F./Conn Iggulden

Darien: Empire of Salt (Empire of Salt #1)

I read Iggulden’s new fantasy book, Darien and loved it. So my thinking is that since I liked the writing style, his historical fiction should also be good. Either way I’m going to give it a try to try and get into historical fiction a bit more!

V.E. Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1)

I have A Darker Shade of Magic currently sitting in my TBR pile next to my bed. I also follow Schwab on twitter as she’s entertaining as a person as well as an author. I’m looking forward to diving into her books next year.

Cassandra Clare

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)

Surprisingly… I never read Clare’s books when I was in the target audience and I only started  her series’ this year. Even though I’m 90% sure I had heard of them somehow.  I have many mixed feelings about Clare’s books as they are both good and bad in places. But she is still an author I discovered this year.

  1. Did you watch the Ready Player One movie? If so, does it live up to the novel or were there more scenes that you wanted to see? Cassandra Clare is one of my absolute favorites ever. She balances humor, angst, and sensitive representation of minorities.

VE Schwab is amazing as well. I enjoyed A Darker Shade of Magic. One of my favorite things about Schwab is the prevalence of discussions around good vs. evil (and what makes someone good). I hope you check out Vicious by her. It’s so, so good.

This is my first time stopping by your lovely blog! Nice to meet you, friend!
