La Roche Posay Toleriane Ultra Intense Soothing Care Review | Soothe and Care For Your Skin

I’m always trying to change up my moisturiser to get the best benefits of them for my dry and eczema prone skin. That’s why when I saw these La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Intense Soothing Care samples going I had to have one. I’ve heard so many good thinks about La Roche-Posay skincare, but I’m always worried about forking out for products before I know if my skin will work well with them.

Main Ingredients and Their Benefits

Isocetyl Stearate acts as a lubricant on the skin’s surface. It dries to form a coating which gives the skin a smoothing and soft appearance.

Squalene has emollient properties that helps retain moisture as well as enhance the penetration of other ingredients.

Shea Butter is naturally soothing and has moisturising properties. It contains nutrients such as Vitamin A, antioxidents such as Vitaman E and also piluphenols and phytonutrients which makes it anti-inflammatory.

Dimethicone is a type of silicon that aids the product to glide onto your skin and also acts as a barrier after application. Dimethicone is used to protect mild skin irritations, dry patches or healing wounds, and is effective at locking in moisture thanks to its larger molecules.

Glycerin promotes skin cell maturation which can help fight effects of skin problems such as psoriasis whilst improving the appearance of skin in general. It is a humecant and helps the skin maintain it’s moisture which in turn makes the skin look healthier.

Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate acts as an anti-caking agent, a viscosity increasing agent and an absorbant. It’s used mainly for aesthetic purposes.

Pentylene Glycol is used as a solvent, preservative and synthetic humectant. It is both water and oil-soluble and can have moisture-binding and antimicrobial properties.

PEG-100 Stearate is used as an emollient, emulsifier and moisturiser although PEG stearates are usually known to clean the skin.

Cetyl Alcohol works as an emollient, emulsifier, thickener and carrying agent. It keeps oil and water from separating and helps the spreadability of the formula. It conditions and softens the skin.

First Thoughts

I’ve heard so many good things about La Roche Posay being great for gentle skincare so I grabbed a sample to try it out on the eczema patches I had on my face. I was really hyped about this moisturiser in particular because it contains emollients similar to E45 and Double Base Gel which is what is often prescribed for my body eczema. Plus it is said to be a great base for foundation because it leaves a (non-greasy) coating to protect the skin.

During Use

When using it there was a definite feel to it that made me think back to E45/Double Base. It felt almost greasy and I was worried it would affect my foundation afterwards. I also felt that it didn’t really absorb into my skin, but the coating was the main aspect to the moisturiser.

After Use

After using it and applying my foundation my skin looked how it would usually look once applying foundation. It didn’t cake up and the greasiness was alleviated by the liquid foundation. I think if I was using a powder however it would have a different effect but I’m not completely sure.

I did find that it worked well as a moisturiser even though I couldn’t tell if it had absorbed. My eczema patches often felt smoother and less irritated, even when I had foundation on. It also made them less red and I felt like they were starting to go away.

Would I Purchase Again?

Yes – it’s really good at moisturising and will be really beneficial during exam season (Stress irritates my eczema) and also winter when my skin is dry.
