2024 has been a rollercoaster of reading experiences, filled with captivating adventures, memorable characters, and a few unexpected twists. Here’s a rundown of my year in books so far:
Best Book Read in 2024 So Far
The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart
This gem of a book swept me off my feet with its unique magic system and intricate world-building. Set in a realm where bone shard magic powers the empire, it follows Lin, the emperor’s daughter, as she seeks to prove her worth and uncover the secrets behind her father’s power. The story is gripping, the characters are well-developed, and the twists keep you on the edge of your seat.
Best Sequel Read in 2024 So Far
A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab
Continuing the adventures of Kell, Lila, and the enchanting, dangerous worlds of Red, Grey, White, and Black London, these sequels ramp up the stakes and magic. V.E. Schwab masterfully balances action, character development, and intricate plotlines, making these books impossible to put down. Lila’s fierce independence and Kell’s brooding determination make them unforgettable companions on this epic journey.

Biggest Disappointment in 2024
Song of Silver, Flame Like Night
This was supposed to be an epic read for me, but it fell short. I found myself reading it and realising I’d… already read this last year but was struggling to remember the characters and the plot, which was disappointing for a book I had hyped up so much. It’s never a great feeling when a highly anticipated book turns out to be forgettable.
Biggest Surprise of 2024
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
This sci-fi classic was a surprise find in my Gollancz goodie bag, and I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. The eerie, suspenseful tale of alien invasion and the paranoia it breeds was a refreshing change from my usual fantasy reads.

Book That Made Me Cry
While no book has made me physically cry this year, The Bone Shard Daughter and The Shades of Magic series have certainly tugged at my heartstrings and delivered emotional moments that left a lasting impact.
Book That Made Me Happy
The Phoenix Keeper by S.A. Maclean
This delightful read brought a smile to my face with its charming characters and heartwarming story. It’s a feel-good fantasy that lifts your spirits and makes you believe in magic.

I couldn’t resist picking up these stunning editions of Tolkien’s classic. The artwork, the quality, everything about them is breathtaking, making them a prized addition to my collection.
Books I Need to Read by the End of 2024
The list is long, but I’m determined to tackle some hefty fantasy series like Mistborn, The Eye of the World, and the Shannara Chronicles. These epic tales have been on my TBR for far too long, and 2024 is the year to finally dive into them.
Here’s to more magical adventures, unforgettable characters, and epic stories in the remaining months of 2024. Happy reading!
