Reading Multiple Books at the Same Time

If you have followed me for a while, you would know I read multiple books at the same time. My ‘currently reading’ on the sidebar usually has at least 3 books on there. I often get questioned about ‘how’ I manage to read multiple books at the same time, even from my family members like to read. It’s a bit like Marmite you either love reading multiple books or hate reading multiple books, and I love it.

Doesn’t it get confusing?

No I rarely get books confused because I’m normally reading different genres of books with very different plots. For example, one book may be an epic fantasy, the second a YA contemporary and the third a historical fiction.

It also means I get to read a wider range of books, as I would normally just read fantasy constantly. By reading multiple books I know I can’t start three epic fantasy series at the same time as then it will start getting confusing.

Different formats at different times

I have eBooks on my phone Kindle app and my actual Kindle. I also purchase a lot of paperback and hardback books. I normally use my phone in my everyday life. If I have a spare 20 minutes I can read some of my book on my phone. When I want some downtime, I normally read a paperback or hardback book. And before bed I’ll use my Kindle as it’s easier to read with low lighting.

I’m normally reading the same book on my phone and my Kindle. But with paper books I normally switch depending on my mood.

Changing moods

I can read all day, but usually I need to change which books i’m reading in that day. Sometimes I’m in the mood for something I have to really think about, so I read a more complex book. Sometimes I want a lighter read. Sometimes I just want to read a specific genre. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for a genre. It’s very much a pick and mix when it come’s to which book I’ll pick up.

What do you do? Do you read just one book at a time? or multiple?

  1. Literally just had this same conversation the other day. All of this is exactly what I responded too!

  2. OH this is an interesting post – thank you so much for sharing this! I don’t read multiple books at a time because I am scared of being confused…so I’m kind of glad to hear that you’re not getting confused at all 🙂 I tend to want to focus on one book at a time, and whenever I’m done with it, I always try to switch genres: reading one contemporary, then fantasy, etc. etc., so I’m not getting bored of it all 🙂

I think I just dislike focusing on one book for too long – especially because sometimes I just dont ‘feel’ like reading a certain genre? So I might start reading a high fantasy but then the next day I’ll want a lighter read and
      I’ll change to a different book🙂

  3. It’s funny because I used to NEVER read more than one book at once–save for school books. That somehow changed within the past couple years. Currently I usually stick to two at once. I usually read one on the kindle app on my phone during my commute (and in lines and stuff) and one physical book when I’m less on-the-go.

Yes one of my main reasons is that a kindle is so much more convenient when I’m on the go but I still love physical books! 😄

  4. I have always been a one book at a time kinda gal, however at the moment I am reading three! A fantasy, a memoir and an audiobook. It’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be! Although I think three may be a little too much for me, but I can see myself reading two at a time more often now.

Yeah I prefer having a choice of at least two books when I want to read something! It makes me happier than forcing myself to finish a book I might not be in the mood for! 🙂

  5. I am definitely a multi-book reader. I’ve tried the “one at a time” idea and just couldn’t do it. 🙂

Yes! When I tried I just wanted to pick up more books! 🙂

  6. I don’t read more than 1 book at a time, not because of getting confused but that’s just my preference! I like to focus on one book and then change to another book after I finish the first one, though it takes a long time. But maybe I’ll try to read more than 1 book (two at most) ^^

OF course! Personal preference is always important too!

  7. I’m the same as you, multiple books over multiple media haha. I switch up genres a lot too, although I’m currently reading three books about witches oops.
