This book encapsulates Slavic folklore and is done in a way which shows off these creatures and stories in a still familiar way. Whilst we’re introduced to lesser known folklore like Rusalka, they’re woven in with enough detail for you as a reader to understand them, without too much info dumping.

One of the things I loved about The Girl King was that it focuses on multiple strong female characters. These characters are also distinct with one another, have different traits, relationships and goals. Each of them has a story, a path to follow, and the fight to lead ahead of them.

Overall, it was a lovely read for an anticipated book. There were a lot of good aspects, with only the predictability putting me off slightly. However the ending left just enough mystery to intrigue me for the next book.
