I also did not care for the romance in this series. It wasn’t bad … I just didn’t care.

Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) was actually my first glimpse into the shadowhunter world. I picked it up on a whim when it was first released knowing basically nothing about Cassandra Clare (yeah I was recently living under a rock). But I have to say I was never once lost in the world or the characters. Of course I immediately binge read every shadowhunter book I could get my hands on afterwards and it was nice to have some background, but I guess what Im saying is that Clare does an amazing job of reintroducing the Blackthorn family in Lady Midnight where I did not feel like TMI was necessary in order to follow along. That being said … unfortunately you do need the TMI and TID background for Lord of Shadows. You will probably still fare well if you want to read TDA without those under your belt, but I would say there is a lot more tie in with less re-introduction.
