Uptown Oracle Reads… No Ordinary Star

In 2525, Humans no longer need to sleep or eat, they have small tablets for that. The Clockmaster summons the ‘perfect’ soldier to the North Pole as the Great Clock needs fixing. When there he comes across the girl, an outsider, and they must work together to ensure peace. No Ordinary Star is the first in a trilogy as the two try to change the world.

No Ordinary Star (No Ordinary Star #1)

I first wanted to read No Ordinary Star because I was promised a big library within its pages. I was disappointed, as it came too late and nothing much happened within it. In 2524, books are ‘weapons’ due to the ideas that can be got from them. The new world has no need for new ideas. Plus, women and children aren’t allowed to learn how to read or write. There’s strict governance on who is in charge and superior within this world.

The book was short and packed full of information about this new future world. It almost read like a list of different advancements. There were so many advancements in medicine and lifestyle. You don’t need to drink, eat or sleep because you can live off small tablets. Scientists create and genetically modify children. The government has removed music, art and love from humanity.

This future brings up so many discussion points and thoughts when reading. Are all these advancements moral? Is this the right thing to do? There’s separation of men and women, as men treat women as an inferior species. This book makes you think about what you actually want for the future.

The main problem with this book is that… nothing really happened? There wasn’t a lead up to one big event. It just felt really flat and uninteresting. At times I was thinking of things that could happen, but they just didn’t. I know it’s a trilogy though, so I’m assuming something will happen in the second book. But the first book shouldn’t have been used to just set up the world and characters, especially as the book is so small. I think it could have been one big book instead of a trilogy just to make it run at a better pace.

No Ordinary Star* was sent to me as an eBook by the Author, MC Frank. This is an honest and unbiased review.

Oh I love the idea already, do you think I can find a copy in a bookstore? I haven’t heard of the author or the book before but sounds promising. Looking forward to read it.

I’m pretty sure No Ordinary Star is self-published so it wont be in many bookstores if it’s even in bookstores! I would recommend Amazon to find a copy but if you go to the authors website http://www.mcfrankauthor.com/2017/05/novels-lose-me.html she has links to where you can buy each of her novels! 😊

  2. Shame!
I feel like it can be a trap some trilogies fall into that the first book is too much set up and not enough story.
