Aster, the protector
Violet, the favorite
Tansy, the medic
Mallow, the fighter
Clementine, the catalystThe country of Arketta calls them Good Luck Girls – they know their luck is anything but. Sold to a “welcome house” as children and branded with cursed markings. Trapped in a life they would never have chosen.
When Clementine accidentally murders a man, the girls risk a dangerous escape and harrowing journey to find freedom, justice, and revenge in a country that wants them to have none of those things. Pursued by Arketta’s most vicious and powerful forces, both human and inhuman, their only hope lies in a bedtime story passed from one Good Luck Girl to another, a story that only the youngest or most desperate would ever believe.
It’s going to take more than luck for them all to survive.
The Good Luck Girls has trigger warnings for murder, suicide, rape and sexual assault.
The Good Luck Girls is an amazingly fast paced book. Starting with an intense story and leading 5 girls onto an adventure. Our Titular Good Luck Girls escape the brothel they’re stuck in and must find a way to remove their favours so they can live their lives.
The favourts being a tattoo which lights up and displays that the girls are Good Luck Girls in this universe felt like a unique addition. Each of the girls is also named for the flower the favour resembles – which resonates even more when they start using their original names as they get further away.
Aster is our POV character and the protector of the group, as well as sister to Clementine. I loved Aster’s strong personality which at times can be quite unlikable, however this is in situations where you totally expect people to be hard on themselves and those around them. She’s in charge throughout the book, and I loved where she ended up at the end of the book – despite fighting for a different life.
All five girls are insanely strong women. Whilst male characters are introduced, and some even try to help the girls – these situations didn’t not remove how capable to girls were. The girls also worked together and relied on each other for their strengths, which helped them to escape multiple times.
The only thing I would say I didn’t like about the book is that the story itself wasn’t that unique. I adore the characters and their backstories (My god – Violet’s secretive nature really pulled on my heartstrings when we find out about her) and the world building has lots of unique additions. But the story of escaping and having to get across the country whilst stealing from others is at times predictable.
Positives of
- Characters
- Backstories and world building
Negatives of
- Story has been told before
I received The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis from the publisher. This is an unbiased and honest review.
